Data Dividends Integration
Proposal to add "Data Dividends" as a component of Layer 3 (Collective Ownership) in the Pyramid of Prosperity
Context
As corporations increasingly monetize user data, citizens should receive direct compensation for their contributions to this value creation. This proposal establishes a formal mechanism within the Pyramid of Prosperity framework.
Problem Statement
Currently, Layer 3 (Collective Ownership) includes sovereign wealth funds, public infrastructure, and community-owned enterprises. However, it does not address the significant value generated from personal data3, which corporations extract and monetize without adequate compensation to data generators.
Proposed Solution
Add "Data Dividends" as a fourth component of Layer 3 with the following characteristics:
- Definition: Regular payments to citizens derived from corporate profits generated through the use of collective personal data
- Mechanism: Data trusts that negotiate on behalf of citizens and distribute proceeds
- Valuation: Standardized methodologies for assessing data contribution value
- Privacy: Strong protections ensuring data use remains consensual and transparent
Alignment with Principles
This proposal directly supports:
Human Agency First: Citizens gain control over their data and benefit from its use, rather than being passive subjects of data extraction.
Implementation Considerations
Implementation would require:
- Legislative framework for data rights
- Technical infrastructure for tracking and distribution
- International coordination for global data flows
- Governance structures for data trusts
